Does bracing alter the natural history of Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis?
نویسندگان
چکیده
Methods Medical records and x-rays were reviewed, and DNA was collected with a saliva sample in two cohorts of Caucasian female AIS patients. A risk of progression score was calculated using 53 genetic markers with utility for calculating the risk of AIS curve progression from < 25° to > 40° before skeletal maturity or > 50° at maturity (1-200). Group A (2442 females) had no brace treatment and their outcome at maturity or surgery was known. Group B (308 females) were brace compliant for more than one year and their curve severity at maturity or surgery was known. Results There was little statistical difference in the curves representing risk of progression versus curve severity when the two groups were compared. (Figure 1)

Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis: natural history and long term treatment effects
Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis is a lifetime, probably systemic condition of unknown cause, resulting in a spinal curve or curves of ten degrees or more in about 2.5% of most populations. However, in only about 0.25% does the curve progress to the point that treatment is warranted.Untreated, adolescent idiopathic scoliosis does not increase mortality rate, even though on rare occasions it can ...
متن کاملEffectiveness of Providence nighttime bracing in patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis.
Interest has increased in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis braces that are worn only part time. One such brace, the Providence brace, is being used with increasing frequency despite limited literature evaluating its ability to alter the natural course of disease. The authors retrospectively identified 34 patients meeting modified Scoliosis Research Society (SRS) inclusion criteria who were treat...

UNLABELLED Skeletally immature patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis are at risk for curve progression. Although numerous nonoperative methods have been attempted, including physical therapy, exercise, massage, manipulation, and electrical stimulation, only bracing is effective in preventing curve progression and the subsequent need for surgery. Brace treatment is initiated as either fu...
متن کاملNonfusion treatment of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis by growth modulation and remodeling.
BACKGROUND Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is a common disorder in which the spine gradually develops a curvature that is first detected in patients between 11 and 17 years of age. The only accepted treatment methods are bracing and surgery. Whether brace treatment alters the natural history is being questioned, and patient compliance is low. Surgery usually includes a spinal fusion that ...
متن کاملEffectiveness of a complete conservative treatment of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (bracing and exercises) based on SOSORT management criteria: results according to the SRS criteria for bracing studies
Background The SRS criteria give the methodological reference frame to present results of bracing. SOSORT criteria give the clinical reference frame for an appropriate bracing treatment. The combination of the two has never been presented in a study until now Objectives Verifying the efficacy of a complete conservative treatment of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) according to the best met...
